Emmitt Perry Jr., better known as his professional name, Tyler Perry, was born on September 13, 1969, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Willie Maxine Perry and Emmitt Perry Sr., a carpenter. Tyler Perry has three siblings. While growing up, his father was very abusive towards him, but to get away from the heartache of being beat, he loved going to church with his mother. When he was 16, he legally changed his name to Tyler Perry, to put distance between he and his father. He did not finish high school, but earned his GED.
