Trump Replaces COVID Resources with Lab Leak Narrative
The Trump administration has transformed the federal government’s primary COVID-19 information portals into platforms promoting the lab leak theory of the virus’s origin. COVID.gov and COVIDTests.gov, which previously offered resources for testing, vaccines, and treatment, now redirect to a White House page titled “Lab Leak: The True Origins of COVID-19,” according to The New York Times.
The new website features President Trump positioned between the words “lab” and “leak,” with a satellite image of Wuhan, China as background. This dramatic shift in federal messaging comes as the administration takes a definitive stance on a theory that has divided intelligence agencies and scientific experts for years.

Intelligence Community Remains Divided
Despite the administration’s confident presentation, the lab leak theory has not achieved consensus among U.S. intelligence agencies. The Central Intelligence Agency recently shifted its assessment to favor the lab leak hypothesis, but did so with “low confidence” and without new intelligence. Instead, the agency based its updated position on a reevaluation of existing evidence about safety conditions at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Other agencies remain split on the pandemic’s origins. A declassified report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in 2023 revealed that the intelligence community remained divided, with no definitive conclusion about whether the virus emerged through natural spillover from animals or from a laboratory accident.
The website does not address evidence that many scientists believe points to a natural origin, such as data about early cases linked to an illegal wild-animal market in Wuhan and genetic information that some researchers interpret as supporting animal-to-human transmission.
From Health Resource to Political Position
The transition removes valuable public health resources that previously helped Americans access testing and vaccines during a pandemic that continues to claim lives. According to ABC News, the COVID.gov page, as recently as last week, provided information about testing, treatment, and vaccination against COVID-19, as well as resources for those suffering from Long COVID.
In place of these health resources, the site now presents five arguments supporting the lab leak theory: that the virus possesses “a biological characteristic that is not found in nature,” that data shows all cases “stem from a single introduction into humans,” that “Wuhan is home to China’s foremost SARS research lab,” that researchers at that lab “were sick with COVID-like symptoms in the fall of 2019,” and that “if there was evidence of a natural origin it would have already surfaced.”
Fauci in the Crosshairs
The revamped website takes direct aim at former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci, featuring his photo alongside the presidential pardon granted by former President Joe Biden. The site emphasizes that the pardon covered “any offenses” and accuses Fauci of helping edit and amplify a 2020 research paper supporting the natural origin theory.
This continues a long-running dispute between Fauci and his critics. During congressional testimony in June 2024, Fauci strongly rejected accusations that he influenced scientists to change their minds by offering grant money, calling such claims “absolutely false, and simply preposterous.”
“The accusation that I tried to cover up the possibility that the virus originated from a lab… the truth is exactly the opposite,” Fauci testified last year.
Beyond Origins: Questioning Pandemic Measures
The website extends beyond the origins debate to question the efficacy of key public health measures implemented during the pandemic, including social distancing, masking, and lockdowns. It also criticizes the response from New York officials during the early stages of the pandemic.
These claims appear to draw from the final report of the Republican-led Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, released in December 2024. The subcommittee’s conclusions have themselves been subject to debate among public health experts.

Diplomatic Implications
The administration’s definitive stance on the lab leak theory could have implications for U.S.-China relations. In January, President Trump acknowledged that COVID-19 had “strained” his relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“I like President Xi very much. I’ve always liked him. We always had a good relationship. It was very strained with COVID coming out of Wuhan,” Trump said in remarks to the World Economic Forum earlier this year.
The website transformation represents one of the most visible efforts by the new administration to reshape the narrative around the pandemic’s origins and response, replacing public health resources with content advancing a specific political position on a still-contested scientific question.
