Tirico Steps From Sidelines to TODAY Show Spotlight
NBC Sports veteran Mike Tirico is temporarily trading football fields for morning television as he steps in as guest host on the TODAY Show this week. The 58-year-old sportscaster, known primarily for his play-by-play commentary on Sunday Night Football since 2022, will join Savannah Guthrie while her regular co-host Craig Melvin enjoys time off with family during Easter vacation.
“I’m beyond excited. I am stoked,” Tirico said ahead of his hosting stint, according to NBC Insider. “We know what the TODAY show has meant to this country for so many years and to be a part of that franchise and to be a part of that history and to do it sitting next to the big sister I never had every morning — dreams come true.”
To welcome him to the morning television world, Guthrie gave Tirico a comprehensive tour of 30 Rockefeller Center, complete with a lunch featuring a turkey sandwich specially named in his honor. The temporary assignment highlights NBC’s confidence in Tirico’s versatility beyond sports broadcasting, where he’s built his reputation over more than three decades.

From Monday Night to Morning Television
Tirico’s career path to morning television has been built on a foundation of sports broadcasting excellence. After graduating from Syracuse University, he joined ESPN as a SportsCenter anchor, quickly rising through the ranks during his 20+ years with the network. His regular appearances on Monday Night Football established him as one of the most recognizable voices in sports broadcasting.
Since joining NBC Sports in 2016, Tirico has expanded his portfolio to include coverage of premier events including the Kentucky Derby, the U.S. Open, and multiple Olympic Games. His upcoming role as play-by-play announcer for NBA games when the new season begins in October marks another expansion of his broadcasting responsibilities, building on his previous experience calling NBA games from 2002-2016.
Despite being primarily known for his work in sports, NBC executives clearly see Tirico’s potential beyond that sphere. “He was the consensus choice. In fact, I would say it was never even a choice. It was obvious,” Guthrie remarked about Tirico’s selection as temporary co-host, signaling the network’s confidence in his ability to transition seamlessly to morning television.
Family Man Behind the Microphone
While many viewers know Tirico from his broadcasting work, fewer are familiar with his personal life. According to The Sun, Tirico has been married to Deborah “Debbie” Gibaratz since 1991, after the couple met during their undergraduate years at Syracuse University, where they bonded over a shared passion for sports.
Debbie was no stranger to athletics herself, serving as tri-captain of the 1989 Syracuse University women’s basketball team. She graduated with a degree in finance before earning an MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business. Despite Tirico’s career requiring significant travel, the couple has remained grounded in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where they’ve lived since the 1990s.
The couple shares two children: son Jordan, who graduated from Stanford University in 2023 with a degree in political science and now works as a Ventures Analyst at Wasserman, and daughter Cammi, a Northwestern University graduate who was active in campus organizations including Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business fraternity.

Expanding Horizons in Broadcasting
As Tirico prepares to cover his fourth Olympic Games in Paris this summer alongside notable NBC personalities including Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, and Peyton Manning, his temporary role on TODAY offers viewers a glimpse of his range beyond sports commentary. His willingness to step into different broadcasting environments showcases the versatility that has made him a valuable asset for NBC.
While his stint on TODAY is temporary, it highlights the increasing crossover between sports and entertainment broadcasting, with networks leveraging the popularity and communication skills of sports commentators in broader contexts. For Tirico, the opportunity represents another milestone in a career defined by continuous growth and adaptation.
Whether calling the action from the sidelines of an NFL game or discussing the morning’s headlines on TODAY, Tirico continues to demonstrate the versatility and professionalism that have defined his three-decade career in broadcasting — ensuring that wherever television viewers tune in this year, his familiar voice won’t be far away.
