Stamp was the son of Thomas stamp and Ethel Esther who passed away in 2005 and 1987 respectively. Thomas was a tugboat stoker. Stamp spent hsi early years in the Canal Road, Bow located in the East End. This ended as his family moved to Plaistow, West Ham, London. It is here that he attended the Plaistow County Grammar School. He had a distant relationship with his father as he was absent for long period of time with the Merchant Navy. Hence, he was mostly brought up by his aunts, mother and grandmother. In his growing up days, he started admiring actor Gray Cooper after his mother had taken him to watch Beau Geste when he was just 3 years old. He started idolising him. He took great inspiration from James Dean, a 1950s trained method actor.
After he left school, Terence took up work at various advertising agencies in London. He worked his way up to gain a reasonable salary. In the middle of 1950s, he worked for a professional golfer Reg Knight. He was an assistant to him who played at Wanstead Golf Club, located in East London. He expresses that this period of his life had a positive impact, in his autobiography Stamp Album which was released in 1988. Stamp wanted to become an actor only after a realisation when he found out that he can no longer be at National Service for 2 years. This was because he was rejected for going through a treatment on his feet.
Stamp had got a lot of coverage when he was in relationships with British actress Julie Christie and English supermodel Jean Shrimpton. The media often covered a lot between Stamp and Shrimpton. It was only after the relationship with Shrimpton ended that he moved to Pune, India. He went to the OSHO ashram and learned meditation, studied Rajneesh’s teachings and completely dropped out of the society for many years. Later, in 2002, Stamp got married to a 29 year old Elizabeth O’Rourke. He was 69 when they got married. But the couple got a divorce in 2008 on the grounds of unreasonable behavior.
He was trained in the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. After finishing his course, he started his career in acting in 1962. He has appeared in as many as 60 films and above. He earned an Academy Award nomination for his debut film performance in Billy Budd. The film also gave him a BAFTA nomination for being the best newcomer.
Some of his major films include The Collector where he plays a butterfly collector, Superman 1 and 2 as General Zod, The Limey as Wilson, Star Wars Episode 1 as Supreme Chancellor Valorum, The Adventures of Priscilla as a transgender woman named Bernadette Bassinger.
He has also done some notable movies like Queen of Desert, The Haunted Mansion, Elektra, Wanted, Yes Man, Get Smart, Valkyrie, Big Eyes, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
For his amazing acting skills, Stamp has won a Golden Globe, a Cannes Film Festival award, a Mystfest, a Satellite Award, a Silver Bear, and Seattle International Film Festival Award. Terence has done voice work, a narration for Jazz Britannia on the BBC, 1966- A Nation Remembers in 2016. It was the same year which marked the 50th Anniversary of 1966 FIFA World Cup victory for England.
