He was apart of the “Fabulous Four,” a group of boxers who all fought each other throughout the 1980’s, and which consisted of himself, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler. Ray Charles Leonard, also known as “Sugar” Ray Leonard, was born on May 17, 1956, in Wilmington, North Carolina, to Cicero, a supermarket manager and Getha Leonard, a nurse. He is the fifth of seven children, and was named after his mother’s favorite singer, Ray Charles. Sugar Ray Leonard and his family moved to Washington, D.C., when he was three years old and settled into Palmer Park, Maryland, by the time he was ten. He attended Parkdale High School.


Sugar Ray Leonard started boxing in 1969 at the Pational Park recreational center with his brother, Roger, who helped trained him. He was trained by Dave Jacobs, a former boxer, and Janks Morton, who were both volunteer coaches. In 1972, Leonard started his boxing career, by competing in the featherweight quarterfinals at the National AAU Tournament, against boxer, Jerome Artism, in which he lost. Leonard went on to compete in the Easter Olympic Trials in 1973 and he won the National Golden Gloves Lightweight Championship. However, he was defeated by Randy Shields in the final of the National AAU Lightweight Championship, the same year. In 1974, he earned the Golden Gloves and the National AAU Lightweight Championship titles. The next year he won the National AAU Light Welterweight Championship and the Light Welterweight Championship at the Pan American Games. He represented the U.S. in the 1976 Olympics, as a light welterweight contestant. With his success in the Olympics, he won the Olympic Gold Medal. A few years later, in 1979, Sugar Ray Leonard won the World Boxing Council’s welterweight title. In 1984, he retired from boxing to pursue a degree in business administration from the University of Maryland. However he returned to boxing in 1986, to fight Marvin Hagler, but after losing, Leonard announced his retirement again in 1987. He returned to boxing in 1988, to fight Don Lalonde at Caesar’s Palace, in Las Vegas. This bout between him and Lalonde, proved to be one of the controversial fights of his career. Years later, in 1990, he withdrew from WBC Super Middleweight Championship, stating how he was not interested in a third comeback. However, in 1997, he returned to the IBC Middleweight Championship to fight Hector Camacho. After losing to Camacho, he declared that this bout was his final fight.
