Stephen John Nash was born on February 7, 1974, in Johannesburg, South Africa, to a Welsh mother, Jean, and an English father, John. His family moved to Regina, Saskatchewan, when Nash was just 18 months old, before they settling in, Victoria, British Columbia. His father was a professional soccer player, in different parts of the world. Steve Nash grew up loving sports as well, with him playing ice hockey and soccer with his younger brother, Martin, while growing up. He started playing basketball at the age of 12, and he originally attended Mount Douglas Secondary School in, Saanich, British Columbia. However, after his grades dropped, his parents enrolled him in St. Michaels University School, a private boarding school in Victoria, British Columbia. After joining the Broncos team at the university, Nash led the Broncos to a WCC Tournament. In that game, he scored he scored six straight free throws in the last 30 seconds. Even though, the Broncos, lost to Temple in the NCAA Men’s Division, their season was successful. The next year, the Broncos rebounded, with Nash being named Conference Player of the Year and the team topping the WCC.

After for for the Suns for two years, he went to play for the Dallas Mavericks in 1998.
