Stephen Glenn Martin was born on August 14, 1945, in Waco, Texas, to Mary Lee and Glen Vernon Martin, a real estate agent and aspiring actor. Steve Martin has stated that his father expressed his affection through buying him bikes and cars and that there were mostly emotions of hatred towards him. He was raised in Inglewood, California and him and his family later moved to Garden Grove, California. He was a cheerleader, while attending Garden Grove High School. While in high school, Martin would work at Disneyland, selling guidebooks on the weekends and in the summertime, he would work full time. After graduating from high school, he attended Santa Ana College, where he took drama and English poetry classes. After spending his freetime in doing comedy productions with his friend Kathy Westmoreland and girlfriend Stormie Sherk, Martin was inspired to enroll in California State University, for philosophy. However, in 1967, he transferred to UCLA and changed majors. After he turned 21, he dropped out of college.

Career

Steve Martin has spent his life entertaining ever since he was a younger, but he did not start professionally entertaining fans, until 1967 when he became a writer for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Afterwards, in 1969 and 1970, he made appearances on the television shows, The Tonight Show, The Steve Allen Show, the Virginia Graham Show, and Saturday Night Live. With his stand up career being on the rise, he released two albums in the 1970’s, Let’s Get Small and A Wild and Crazy Guy. Both albums peaked at No.2 on the U.S. sales charts. After venturing into small film roles, he was cast in his first leading role, in the film, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Band, in 1978. In 1979, he co-wrote and starred in the film, The Jerk. During the 1980’s, Martin’s career took off, with him being cast in films, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, All of Me, and Three Amigos. In, 1991, he portrayed a role different from his comedic roles that he had grown known for, called, Grand Canyon. He went on to portray a darker role in the film, The Spanish Prisoner, in 1997, where he played Jimmy, a suspicious man who develops interest in the work of a young businessman. Years later, in 2003, he starred in the hit film, Bringing Down the House, with actress and rapper, Queen Latifah. He also starred in the film, Cheaper by the Dozen, that same year. In 2006, he played Inspector Clouseau, in the films The Pink Panther and The Pink Panther 2. Outside of acting, Steve Martin loves to write and has written the novella, Shopgirl, and The Pleasure of My Company, in 2003. He released his memoir, Born Standing Up, in 2007, which was named The Top 10 Nonfiction Books in 2007 by Time Magazine.
