Sinbad was born on 10th November 1956 to Louise and Dr. Donald Beckley Adkins. He is one of the five siblings and graduated from Benton Harbor High School. He went to the University of Denver and joined United States Airforce after his college. He worked as a boom operator and explored his interest in stand-up comedy.

Sinbad wanted to take stand-up comedy seriously when he was interested in Air Force Talent Contest in 1981. His misbehaviors stemming from rejection from Air Force basketball team made him go AWOL. Later, he was given a dishonorable discharge.
He chose Sindbad as his stage name as he admired Sindbad the Sailor. His comic career began when he appeared on Star Search and became a finalist. Though he lost to John Kassir, his talent didn’t go unnoticed. He was cast on The Redd Foxx Show as Byron Lightfoot.
In 1987, Sinbad won a role in A Different World, which is a spinoff of The Cosby Show. He was a season regular and was cast from 1988 to 1991.
His first comedy special in HBO Sinbad: Brain Damaged was released in 1990. He won image award in 1995 for his standup comedy performance at Paramount Theater.
Sinbad hosted Its Showtime at the Apollo from 1989 to 1991. He returned back to the show in 2005. In 1993, he became so popular that Fox started The Sinbad Show. He played the lead role of David Bryan who is a bachelor and becomes a foster parent to two children. Salma Hayek also starred in the show and received praises. In 1998, he won NAACP Image Award.
