Shelley is the daughter of Leland Long and Ivadine. Her mother was a school teacher and her father worked in the rubber industry. Later he became a teacher as well. Shelley was an active member of her high school speech team. She competed in the Indiana High School Forensic Association. In 1967, Shelley won the NFL’s (National Forensic League) National Championship in Original Oratory.
She graduated from South Side High School situated in Fort Wayne. Shelley had studied drama at Northwestern University but she left it before her graduation to create a career in modeling and acting. As an actress, her first break was through a commercial in Chicago.
Her best known role is as Diane Chambers. This was played in a sitcom called Cheers. Her work in Cheers was highly appreciated by everyone that gave her humongous recognition. This has one of her best performance till date. She got five Emmy nominations for her role and won in 1983 for an outstanding lead actress. She had one two Golden Globe awards as well for that role. Shelley reprised the same role in Frasier for which she again received a guest star nomination under the Emmy Award. Her very first work was in 1977 in film called The Key.
