Richard Williams, another Compton man, who had the same name as Serena’s father mentored her in tennis and later went on to start the Venus and Serena Williams Tennis Academy. William’s family moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, in order to let William’s attend Rick Macci’s tennis academy. Under Macci’s tutoring, Williams went on to become number one amongst the under-10 tennis players in Florida. She had a track record of 46-3 on the United States Tennis Association. Williams left Macci’s academy in the ninth grade and went on to be tutored by her father at home. Williams’ first professional debut was in 1995 in Quebec at the Bell Challenge. She participated as a wild-card entry. She lost in the first qualifying round to Annie Miller.
