Santos Shares Prison Survival Strategy Ahead of Term
Former Congressman George Santos, facing a 7-year federal prison sentence starting this summer, has begun publicly discussing his concerns about prison safety and his strategy for surviving his incarceration.
The disgraced politician has expressed fears about being targeted behind bars while simultaneously launching a media campaign focused on prison reform, drawing both criticism and attention ahead of his July surrender date.

Safety Concerns Drive Call for Solitary Confinement
In a recent interview with TMZ, Santos revealed his preferred strategy for surviving his prison term: requesting solitary confinement. The former congressman cited concerns about his personal safety, suggesting that his sexuality and previous political activities make him a potential target for violence, according to TMZ.
“There’s a lot of bad hombres behind bars who want to rough him up for one reason or another,” the entertainment outlet reported after their interview with Santos, who discussed what he would do during 7 years alone in a cell.
Santos has publicly stated that the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) will face significant consequences if he experiences physical harm while incarcerated, framing his public statements as part of a broader conversation about prison reform rather than personal concerns.
From Congressional Expulsion to Federal Prison
Santos was sentenced in April to 87 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft charges. The sentence followed a dramatic fall from power that included his expulsion from Congress in December 2023, as reported by NBC News.
U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert, who handed down the sentence, questioned Santos’ remorse during the proceedings, asking “Where is the remorse?” before imposing the maximum recommended sentence sought by prosecutors.
In addition to prison time, Santos was ordered to pay nearly $374,000 in restitution and over $200,000 in forfeiture, with a surrender date set for July 25, 2025.
Clemency Appeal to Trump
Following his sentencing, Santos quickly turned to social media to appeal to President Donald Trump for clemency, describing his 7-year sentence as “an over the top politically influenced sentence” and imploring Trump to give him “a chance to prove I’m more than the mistakes I’ve made,” according to CBS News.
In an interview with NY1, Santos acknowledged that while he hadn’t directly reached out to Trump, he believes “the president is aware of my situation” and could potentially grant him clemency.
Trump has not publicly responded to Santos’ appeals, leaving the former congressman to prepare for what appears to be an inevitable prison term beginning this summer.

A “Mountain of Lies” Leads to Prison
Santos’ legal troubles stemmed from what prosecutors described as “a mountain of lies, theft, and fraud” perpetrated during his 2022 congressional campaign, including falsifying fundraising figures, misappropriating donor funds, and stealing identities.
His dramatic descent from newly elected congressman to federal prison inmate took just over two years, with his fabricated life story first unraveling shortly after his election to represent New York’s 3rd Congressional District.
Prosecutors noted that despite his guilty plea, Santos had continued to demonstrate a “genuine lack of contrition” by launching a podcast called “Pants on Fire” and making other public appearances that seemed to capitalize on his notoriety rather than express genuine remorse.
