Sir Richard Branson is the Head of Virgin group, an adventurer and a Humanitarian. He was born 18th July, 1950 to Edward James Branson, a Barrister and Eve Branson an Air hostess. Richard, a British national, attended Stowe school but his academic performance was not up to the mark.
Richard first attempt at business was his starting a Magazine called “The Student.” Interviews with popular celebrities like Mike Jagger made the magazine very popular. The magazine also carried ads of popular music records that improved sales.
He next set up a record store called Virgin Records in Oxford London. He sold for discounted prices and advertised these products in his magazine. His parents, especially his mother was ever supportive when he ran into few problems at every stage.
After establishing and earning profits from the store he set up his own recording studio by hiring an Estate which he named “The Manor Studio”. He took risks by signing bands like Sex Pistol, when other studios treaded the field cautiously. Some of the artists who recorded with Virgin Records are UB40, Paula Abdul, Rolling stones, Steve Winwood, Culture club, Faust and Can. He also produced few records in the 80s such as Baa Baa Black Sheep which ranked 42 in the UK Charts for the year 1982.
He bought a Gay night club called Heaven with David Frost around this time. It was sold in the year 2003. Some of the other ventures that Branson took up in the 80s are Virgin Games, Virgin Communications, Virgin Holidays, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Virgin Cargo.
In 2012, his Virgin Atlantic Airways held the record of the seventh largest airline in UK in terms of travelling passengers. Branson however had to sell his Virgin Records to EMI in 1992 to keep His Airways Company running. Later, he setup V2 records in 1996 to keep a finger on the pulse of the music industry.
In the 1990s and 2000s decades, Branson widened his business empire to establish offices at places like Japan, America, Italy and various other regions of the world. He also set up Virgin Books, Virgin Vodka, Virgin Express- Low cost airline, Virgin Cosmetics, Virgin Trains, Virgin.net, Virgin Mobile and Virgin Active. Virgin Mobile was his first foray into the field of Telecommunications.

He was first married to Kristen Tomassi in 1972 but they divorced in 1979. He is presently married to Joan Templeman and they have two children daughter Holly and son Sam. He is an experienced kite surfer holding many records in this field. Branson also has some strong view against Formal dress codes.
He has authored an autobiography “Losing my Virginity” which is an International Best seller. His Humanitarian initiatives includes donations to The Elders organization formed by Nelson Mandela, contributions for organizations that sought solutions on Environment issues, contributions to centers that work with children, Loan provision for upcoming entrepreneurs, partnering African Wildlife foundations and many more.

Richard Branson received the Title Sir for Entrepreneurship when he was knighted by Prince of Wales, the year being 1999.
BBC Polls 2002 listed him as one of the 100 Greatest Britons ever.
He received an honorary degree from Loughborough University. He has also received German Media Prize and Business Peace prize, Norway. He has been honored by the United Nations Council and various Universities as well.
