RHOC Alum’s Brother Dies in Police Shooting Incident
Geoffrey Shyam Stirling, the 45-year-old brother of former “Real Housewives of Orange County” star Lydia McLaughlin Stirling, was fatally shot during a traffic stop on Thursday night in Newport Beach, California. The incident has prompted an investigation by the California Department of Justice as the family mourns this tragic loss.
According to officials, Stirling was pulled over while riding his motorcycle along Pacific Coast Highway near Hoag Hospital shortly after 9:15 p.m. on April 17. What began as a routine traffic stop quickly escalated into a violent confrontation that ended in gunfire.

Traffic Stop Turns Deadly
The Newport Beach Police Department has released details of the encounter through an Instagram post, stating that Stirling “became uncooperative and assaulted the officer” after being stopped for a traffic violation. During the altercation, police claim Stirling managed to remove the officer’s department-issued taser from their duty belt and attempted to deploy it multiple times.
“At that point, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the department’s statement explained. Additional officers who arrived at the scene rendered medical aid until Newport Beach Fire Department personnel transported Stirling to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A witness who lives near Hoag Hospital told OnScene.TV, a freelance news organization, that they heard six or seven gunshots during the incident, as reported by People Magazine. No officers were injured during the confrontation.
Family in Mourning
The tragic incident comes just six months after the death of Lydia and Geoffrey’s mother, Judy Stirling, who appeared alongside Lydia on RHOC before passing away from breast cancer in October 2024.
“My family and I are devastated by the loss of my brother,” Lydia said in a statement on Friday. “We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support from friends, family, and the community. We kindly ask for privacy as we mourn.”
Following the news, McLaughlin shared a cryptic post on Instagram with the message, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds,” according to The Independent. She captioned the post, “Because of the pain of Good Friday, we have the JOY of Easter Sunday. #JesusIsLord.”
Investigation Underway
California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on Friday that his office is investigating the officer-involved shooting. After the California Department of Justice completes its investigation, the findings will be turned over to the DOJ’s Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for independent review.
The DOJ has asked anyone with information related to the shooting to call (916) 210-2871 to report it.
