Nicholas Scott Cannon was born on October 8, 1980, in San Diego, California, to Beth Gardner and James Cannon. Growing up, he was mainly raised by his paternal grandfather, whom he and his father called, “dad.” However during his teenage years, he lived with his mother and graduated from Monte Vista High School, in 1998. While living in the Lincoln Park’s Bay Vista Housing Projects, which is a neighborhood known for the being gang ridden in Southeast San Diego. Nick Cannon had been a part of the Lincoln Park Bloods, but left the lifestyle of gang banging behind, when one of his friends died. After leaving the gang, he received his first break of stand up comedy at his father’s local cable access program.

Although Nick Cannon grew up in a rough life, after leaving the gang, he started his career at the young age of 11, he auditioned for the television show, It’s Showtime at the Apollo. Soon after, Cannon made an appearance on his father’s religious program on public access television, as a stand up comedian. After starting on his career as a stand up comedian, he began performing in Los Angeles nightclubs, he was discovered by an agent and offered a job at Nickelodeon television channel, where he was the warm-up act on the television show, All That. He was loved so much on the show, that he was given his own television comedy show, in 2002. With this opportunity of getting his comic skits heard, came the opportunity to write and executive produce for his show, The Nick Cannon Show, Keenan and Kel, and Cousin Skeeter. With Cannon’s growing popularity came the opportunity from, actor and comedian, Will Smith, have a small role in the movie, Men in Black II. After his role in Will Smith’s film, he landed his first starring role, in the film, Drumline, a movie about a young man who earns a scholarship to a historically black university, as a drummer, in a marching band. Cannon went on to make his next film, after Drumline, called, Love Don’t Cost a Thing. He not only found his love of entertaining in telling jokes and acting, but also in music. In his self titled television series, he composed the theme song, and also wrote Shorty Put It to the Floor,” for Love Don’t Cost a Thing. In 2003, he released his compact disc, Nick Cannon, with singles, that included, “Feelin’ Freaky,” “Gigolo,” and “Your Pops Don’t Like Me.” Later that summer he was part of the “Scream 3” tour. Since his younger years of being a staff writer and coming up actor, he has recently had his own television show on MTV, called Nick Cannon Presents Wild ‘ N Out, which ran from 2005 – 2007. However after the show ended, fans missed it so much, because of the comedy raps and the guest celebrities, that it returned in 2013 on MTV2. While doing the Wild’ N Out, show, Cannon also served as host on the television show, America’s Got Talent, until 2017.
