Nebraska State Patrol Investigates Family Tragedy
The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating an apparent triple murder-suicide that claimed four lives in rural Dawson County on Saturday morning, sending shockwaves through multiple communities including Cozad, where graduation ceremonies were darkened by news of the tragedy.
Authorities discovered the bodies of four family members after deputies were dispatched to a residence at Johnson Lake’s Plum Creek Canyon area around 9:45 a.m., according to officials.

Family Identified as Investigation Continues
The deceased have been identified as Jeremy Koch, 42, Bailey Koch, 41, and their two sons, Hudson, 18, and Asher, 16. Preliminary investigation indicates that Jeremy Koch killed his wife and two sons before taking his own life, as reported by Nebraska State Patrol.
All four victims were found with fatal knife wounds inside their residence, and investigators recovered a knife at the scene. The Dawson County Attorney has ordered autopsies as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Nebraska State Patrol is leading the homicide investigation with assistance from the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Eustis Fire & Rescue, and the Dawson County Attorney’s Office.
Communities Mourn as Tragedy Affects Graduation
The timing of the tragedy coincided with Cozad High School’s graduation ceremony, creating a somber atmosphere for what should have been a celebratory occasion. During the ceremony, Superintendent Dan Endorf acknowledged the impact on the senior class, noting the “bittersweet emotions felt by the senior class on their graduation day,” according to local news reports.
Holdrege Public Schools also posted about the tragedy on social media, suggesting connections to their school community as well. A message reportedly sent to parents indicated that one of the victims was a staff member at the school.
Local media outlets report that the Koch family had previously shared their mental health story publicly to raise awareness, though details about their advocacy work were not immediately available.

While the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy remains ongoing, authorities have confirmed there is no danger to the public. The Nebraska State Patrol and other agencies have extended condolences “to all, across multiple communities, who will be affected by this incident.”
