Nathan’s father, Daniel was a truck driver who aspired to be a tenor but died of alcoholism in 1967. He was just eleven when his father passed away. His mother Nora was a housewife. She worked as a secretary who later suffered from manic depression, a mental disorder. She died in the year 2000. Nathan has two elder brothers Robert and Daniel. His parents were of Catholic and Irish descent.
Lane went to Saint Joseph’s University located in Philadelphia. He got admission through a drama scholarship. He went along with his brother Dan. After going there, he discovered that the expenses will not be covered fully, so he left and worked for year to gain financial stability. After much struggle, he started acting with off-Broadway productions. He made his first Broadway debut in 1982. In 1983, he got his second Broadway in Merlin. Merlin was a musical play.
At the age of 21, he confessed to his mother that he was gay. She did not accept this and told him to “rather be dead”. Lane publically announced his sexual orientation after the death of Matthew Shepard, an actor. He has been a member of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS for long time and has done fundraising as well for the same. Nathan has been honored by the Human Right Campaign, The Trevor Project, The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
He was in off-Broadway production called Love, Measure for Measure, The Film Society, The Common Pursuit and many more.
The actor is known for doing some really good movies like The Bridgecage, The Producers (a musical), Max Bialystock, Mouse Hunt, Guys and Dolls, The Lion King, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Stuart Little. He is known for his recurring roles in a sitcom series Modern Family. He had other recurring roles in The Good Wife and the famous The People v O.J Simpson.
Nathan received a star on the renowned Hollywood Walk of Fame, in 2006. In 2008, he was introduced in the American Theatre Hall of Fame. Nathan was named after his uncle who was a Jesuit priest. Lane went to a Catholic school located in Jersey City. He was voted the Best Actor in 1974 at St. Peter’s Preparatory High School. Years later he received an award for Prep Hall of Fame Professional Achievement (2011).
