His uncle was also a boxer and an actor and his name was Buddy Baer. Max Jr. had a brother named James Manny Baer and a sister Maude Baer.

He did his graduation from the Santa Clara University in business administration. He always stayed friends with Buddy Ebsen until his death in the year 2003 because of pneumonia and just before his death Dona Douglas and Max Jr. had visited him in the hospital.

This role was the highest point of his career.

In the year 1974, Max Baer started to concentrate more on his career behind the camera in direction, production, and writing.

Macon County Line was a drama that he wrote in which he played the character of Reed Morgan which is also the highest grossing movie per dollar that was invested at that time. The movie made a whopping $25 Million which was quite big considering the fact that it was made in just $110,000. He also directed a comedy named Hometown U.S.A. in the year 1979 after which he retired. He does make an appearance on television from time to time.
