Las Vegas Chihuahua Survives Horrific Dumpster Abandonment
A 12-pound Chihuahua is recovering at a Las Vegas animal hospital after being cruelly thrown into a dumpster and abandoned – an act of animal cruelty now resulting in felony charges against the alleged perpetrator. The incident, captured on security cameras, has sparked outrage across the community and renewed calls for stronger animal protection laws, according to 8 News Now.
Alexis Flores, 30, has been arrested and charged with three counts of willful and malicious torture, maiming, or killing of animals in connection with the incident. The charges come after investigators reviewed security footage showing a man callously disposing of the helpless dog and deliberately returning to ensure the dumpster lid was closed, potentially sealing the animal’s fate.

Lucky Timing Saves Canine from Garbage Truck
The small dog, now named Atreyu after a character from the 1984 movie “The NeverEnding Story,” narrowly escaped death when a neighbor discovered him while taking out trash. According to rescue volunteers, the discovery came shortly before the scheduled garbage collection, meaning the dog could have ended up in a trash compactor had the timing been different.
“We had an individual reach out to us that went to throw trash away in a dumpster, and happened to find a dog inside the dumpster,” explained Lindsey Pinapfel, a Vegas Pet Rescue Project volunteer. “From there, they were able to backtrack to their cameras and see what time that dog arrived in that dumpster.”
The security footage, which has since been turned over to law enforcement, shows the disturbing sequence of events. On April 14, 2025, at approximately 9:14 a.m., a man wearing red shorts and no shirt exited a dark SUV while carrying the small Chihuahua by the neck. The individual approached the dumpster in the 5500 block of Sheila Avenue and forcefully threw the dog inside, according to News 3 Las Vegas.
After discarding the dog, the man returned to his vehicle, performed a U-turn, and drove back to the dumpster specifically to close the lid – an action that investigators believe shows clear intent to harm the animal by ensuring it couldn’t escape and would likely not be discovered.
Arrested and Charged, But Already Released
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Animal Cruelty Detail, alerted to the incident on April 15, worked quickly with Animal Protection Services to investigate the case. Their efforts led to the identification and arrest of Flores, who now faces three serious felony counts of willful or malicious torture of an animal.
Despite the severity of the allegations, court records indicate Flores has already posted bond and been released from custody. A probable cause review for his case is scheduled for Friday afternoon, where prosecutors will present evidence to support the charges against him.
Animal welfare advocates have expressed frustration that individuals accused of such serious animal cruelty offenses can so quickly return to the community, highlighting what they see as inadequacies in how the legal system handles animal abuse cases.
Case Bolsters Support for “Reba’s Law”
The shocking incident has renewed discussions about “Reba’s Law,” legislation currently being considered in the Nevada Legislature that would implement harsher penalties for animal cruelty convictions. Advocates argue that this case perfectly illustrates why stronger legal consequences are needed for those who abuse animals.
“This is the exact reason that we need harsher punishment and stricter rules and laws in regard to animal abuse,” emphasized Pinapfel. “We need to hold people accountable, and something needs to change.”
The proposed legislation, named after a dog who survived severe abuse, would increase penalties for animal cruelty and potentially create a registry of convicted animal abusers to prevent them from owning pets in the future. Supporters believe such measures would serve as stronger deterrents against the type of behavior exhibited in this case.

Road to Recovery Begins
Despite the trauma endured, the Chihuahua appears to be responding well to treatment at a local animal hospital. Atreyu is receiving both medical care and emotional support as he begins the recovery process from his ordeal.
“I don’t care what this dog did, there is no excuse for the abuse that this dog just had to endure,” Pinapfel stated, addressing the inexcusable nature of the cruelty regardless of any behavioral issues the dog might have had. “There are resources” available for pet owners who cannot care for their animals, she added, emphasizing the many alternatives to abandonment or abuse.
The Vegas Pet Rescue Project, which has taken responsibility for Atreyu’s care, reports that the dog is expected to make a full physical recovery. The organization is already receiving inquiries about potential adoption once the Chihuahua is medically cleared and emotionally ready for a new home.
As the criminal case against Flores proceeds through the legal system, animal welfare advocates hope Atreyu’s story will not only result in justice for one dog but also contribute to meaningful changes in how animal cruelty cases are handled in Nevada – ensuring stronger protections for all vulnerable animals in the future.
