Justin James Watt, also known as J.J. Watt, was born on March 22, 1989, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, to Connie, a building operations vice-president and John Watt, a firefighter. J.J. Watt has two younger brothers in the NFL as well, Derek Watt, who plays for the Los Angeles Chargers, and T.J. Watt, who plays linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers. While growing up, J.J. Watt was active in sports, with him playing hockey from the age of four until 13. He even played for several teams that traveled to Canada and Germany. However, Watt gave up playing hockey, once his weekly schedule was conflicted. He also played football throughout his childhood and he fell in love with the sport in the fifth grade. J.J. Watt attended Pewaukee High School, where he became a four-year letter winner in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. In his senior year, he was selected for the first-team All-State. He also earned the Woodland Conference Player of the Year award in his senior year. In 2007, Watt captured the state title in the shot put at the WIAA Division II Championship, setting a new school record. After graduating from high school, J.J. Watt was offered a scholarship to attend Central Michigan University. He played 14 games and compiled 77 receiving yards and 8 receptions and after being asked to play offensive tackle, he decided to forgo his starting spot and scholarship, to walk on at the University of Wisconsin, where he played defensive end. In 2008, Watt was redshirted and was named Wisconsin’s Scout Team Player of the Year. His college career as a football player was so successful, that he skipped his senior season and entered into the 2011 NFL Draft. He was a top performer at the NFL Combine, except for the 40-yard dash. However, after his participation in the NFL combine, he was selected in the first round by the Houston Texans with the 11th overall pick.

In 2015, he suffered a groin injury and a fractured left hand, but he still started in all 16 games and made 76 tackles, with an NFL-leading 17.5 sacks, 8 passes defended, 3 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. Watt underwent back surgery in 2016, for a herniated disc, but he began training on the PUP list, once returning, he started in a game against the Chicago Bears, in which the Texans were victorious over the bears. However, the next week, in a game against the New England Patriots, and Watt recorded two assisted tackles. After the game he was put on injured reserve and underwent surgery the next day. J.J. Watt returned from his injury for the 2017 season and played against Jacksonville Jaguars. In week 5, while playing against the Kansas City Chiefs, he left the game with an injured game. He underwent surgery the next day and was ruled out the rest of the season.
