In the year 2005, Rock was discovered by Anthony Top Dawg Tiffith. He was the CEO of independent record label TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment). He signed him to his label after listening to one of his verse.
After Rock signed up with TDE, he released many mixtapes all the way through his neighbourhood and also through the internet. It was because of the TDE that he was able to get a secured contract for his recordings with Asylum Records. In 2007, he also got a joint venture deal later with Warner Bros Record.
Since 2006, he started releasing several mixtapes and is widely known for his first commercial All My Life. This was in 2008 where Lil Wayne and the very famous Will.I.Am joined hands together for fellow rapper Jay. Rock had a great solo career but apart from that he was also a member of a subgroup of Hip Hop genre named Black Hippy. It had fellow rapper West Coast. It also had Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar and AB-Soul- all of them who are TDE label mates.

In November 2014, Jay appeared on NBC’s late night television sketch variety and comedy show Saturday Night Live. He appeared in this show with musical star Lamar. Together they performed Pay For It.
In 2015 September, he released his second album 90059. It had the support of singles like Gumbo, Money Trees Deuce and the title track. On a winter day of February 2016, Rock got involved in a bad motorcycle accident. This was informed by TDE’s (Top Dawg Enterainment) CEO Anthony Tiffith. Information given by Complex was that he recovered well but had many broken bones in different parts of his body. He went for a surgery and came out of it successfully. On 3rd March, he is to perform at the Observatory located California’s Santa Ana.
