Jermaine Lamarr Cole, better known as, J. Cole, was born on January 28, 1985 in Frankfurt, Germany, at a U.S. Army base. J. Cole had the unfortunate time in his life of not having his father, after he left his mother. His father, who was an African American father, left his white German postal worker mother, and after moving to Fayetteville, North Carolina, she struggled to make ends meet for J. Cole and his brother Zach. However, his mother met, his stepfather, who moved them to a better neighborhood to a house where J. Cole stayed in the house, until he was ready to go to college. During this time, his mother and stepfather’s marriage fell apart and his brother started being abused by his stepfather. After his stepfather left, their house was foreclosed on and his mother became addicted to crack that was introduced to her by a boyfriend. Cole found love for music at an early age and joined the Terry Sanford Orchestra as a violinist. His cousin inspired him to rap when he was 12 years old, while he was visiting Cole from Louisiana. Around this time, he also taught himself how to rap and produce music and used “Blaza,” and then “Therapist,” as his rap names. To keep his love of music going, he joined a local music group, called, Bomm Sheltuh. J. Cole work several part-time jobs as a teenager while he was in high school and at the same time, he had even worked as a mascot at an ice hockey rink. Once he graduated from high school in New York, he attended St. John’s University and received a degree in communications, Magna Cum Laude. The core of J. Before J. Cole made his debut as a well known rapper, he worked as a bill collector. He released his debut mixtape, The Come Up, in 2007. With his rap about everything from college days to struggling to make ends meet, he was led to release his next album in 2009, The Warm Up. After the release this lyrically sharp mixtape, he released, Friday Night Lights, a mixtape that featured Drake on his song, “In the Morning.” With these mixtapes behind him, he was inspired to sign with Jay Z, which led to him standing outside of Jay Z’s studio for three hours. Unfortunately, Jay Z did not sign him, but only after listening to hearing the song “Lights Please,” two years later, did Jay Z find interest in the music that J. Cole made. He then asked J. Cole if he wanted to sign to his label, Roc Nation and signing J. Cole, Jay Z showcased him the song, “A Star is Born,” on his album Blueprint 3. In 2011, Cole released his album, Cole World: The Sideline Story. After releasing the album that chronicled his life, he released his third album, titled, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, in 2014. His most successful album came in 2016, when he released 4 Your Eyes Only, and it debuted at number one in the Billboard 200 charts. Since the start of his career he has continued to grow as an artist and as someone who has real humility.
