A groundbreaking partnership between Quantum Leap Farm and the 1Voice Foundation has provided free equine therapy for approximately 300 children battling pediatric cancer in the Tampa Bay area. The 15-year collaboration offers weekly horseback riding sessions that deliver both physical and emotional benefits to young cancer patients navigating difficult treatment journeys.

Each Tuesday, children enrolled in the program visit the Odessa-based farm where they’re paired with specially trained horses and instructors. The program currently serves 12 children who receive personalized riding lessons tailored to their specific needs and abilities while experiencing the therapeutic benefits of equine interaction.

“Horses are warm. We call them heating blankets with legs,” explained Mary Ann Massolio, Executive Director of 1Voice Foundation, in an interview with FOX 13 News. “Just the motion of riding, you know, how therapeutic that is for your spine.”

Six-year-old Selene represents one of the program’s most remarkable success stories. Following emergency surgery to remove a herniated tumor, she experienced complete loss of motor function, unable to control her legs, mouth, or eyes – a devastating setback for the young child and her family.

When Selene first visited the program in 2023, she could only interact with a toy horse. Today, she confidently rides a horse named Waffles, with her mother Claire Raines noting extraordinary improvements: “Her posture has improved 100%, which in turn, her voice is more steady. She’s very self-aware, so she can notice her changes as well.”

Massolio describes Selene’s journey as exemplifying the program’s potential, showcasing how equine therapy can complement traditional medical treatments with significant physical and psychological benefits. It’s much easier to talk about what’s going on with the horses. There’s a lot of projection, and people that come in groups find that they are challenged by similar issues.”
