Henry Albert “Hank” Azaria was born on April 25, 1964, in Queens, New York City, to Ruth Altcheck, and Albert Azaria, a businessman who ran several dress manufacturing companies. Azaria’s mother was a stay at home mother, who raised him and his two older sisters, Stephanie and Elise. However, before his mother married his father, she was a publicist for Columbia Pictures, who promoted films in Latin America countries. While growing up Azaria would often mimic and remember the scripts of the stand up comedy routines, films, and shows he enjoyed. Hank Azaria attended The Kew-Forest School in Forest Hills. He decided to become an actor after performing in a school play at the age of 16. He went on to study drama at Tufts University from 1981 to 1985. He became friends with actor Oliver Platt, at the university and later they both starred in various college plays. Azaria had decided to become a professional actor, with his first acting gig being an advertisement for Italian television, when he was 17 years old. Although, he had intended to work as a theatrical actor, Azaria quickly realized that there was more promise and opportunity in television. He moved to Los Angeles after being offered work with the talent agent, Harry Gold.


Hank Azaria took up his career in the entertainment business, by setting up his company, Big Theater, with actor Oliver Platt. However, they were only able to perform one play at the theater, called, The Dumb Waiter, and afterwards, Azaria realized that he would be far more successful in his acting career if he took up television roles. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he made his first television debut in an episode of, the comedy drama series, Joe Bosh. He went on to appear in the television film, Nitti: The Enforcer as well as an episode of the television series, Family Ties and an episode of the show, Growing Pains. Along with budding acting career, Azaria also worked as a stand up comedian and a bartender. However, his popularity in acting came, after he was cast on the animated television series, The Simpsons, in 1989. Azaria continues to be a main voice actor on, The Simpsons, today, but he has acted in several other shows and films since then. In 1991, he had a main role in the film, Herman’s Head. He also appeared in the television comedy, Friends and had a voice acting role in the animated series, Spiderman. Azaria went on to make his film debut in the romantic comedy, Pretty Woman, in 1990. In the years after his big film debut, he went on to act in several more films, which include, Now and Then, Anastasia, Great Expectations, and The Simpsons Movie. He also had roles in the films, America’s Sweethearts, Love and Other Drugs, and Run Fatboy Run. In 2004, Azaria held a lead role in the comedy series, Huff as well as taking on a lead role in the television series, Free Agents, in 2011. Most recently, Hank Azaria has had roles in the animated comedy films, The Smurfs and its sequel, The Smurfs 2. In 2017, he took on the role of, Jim Brockmire, in the television comedy series, Brockmire.
