Glen Travis Campbell was born on April 22, 1936, in Billstown, a small community near Pike County, Arkansas. Campbell was the seventh child of 12 children, and lived on a farm with with father, John Wesley and Carrie Dell Campbell. While growing up, Campbell had stated that he and his family barely got by, with growing cotton corn, watermelons, and potatoes. To make extra money, he and his family used to pick cotton for the more successful farmers. However, he started playing the guitar at the age of four after his uncle, Boo spent five dollars at Sears for one and taught him the basics of how to play it. Even though he came from a family of farmers, by the time Campbell was six years old, he was performing for local radio stations. After becoming a teenager, he continued to play the guitar whenever he wasn’t working in the cotton fields. With no formal training in guitar, Campbell developed his talent by listening to the radio and records. He went on to drop out of school when he was 14, so that he could work in Houston, along with his brothers, installing insulation. He later worked at a gas station, but became unhappy with it. With his musical talent, Campbell started performing at fairs and church picnics as well as singing gospel hymns in the church choir. He was able to find more places to perform at because of his performances at these functions and took up playing music on local radio stations and in night clubs. In 1954, when he was just 17 years old, Campbell moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to join his uncle’s band, called Dick Bills and the Sandia Mountain Boys. He also appeared on his uncle’s radio show, K Circle B Time, which was a local children’s program. Along with being a performer on the show, Campbell met his first wife, Diane Kirk, and married her when he was 17 and she was 16, after she got pregnant. Two years after the birth of their daughter, Debby, the two were divorced. In 1958, he formed his own band, called, the Western Wranglers. Glen Campbell died on August 8, 2017.
Although Glen Campbell started his love and passion in music at an early age as a child, his pursuit in music started after he moved to Los Angeles and after marrying his second wife, Billie Nunley. In 1961, Campbell, released his single “Turn Around Look At Me,” and it went to No. 62 on the pop charts. Capitol Records recognized his talent and signed him to their label in 1962. After signing to Capitol Records, his music did not make the greatest mark in his career, but becoming apart of the musical group, Wrecking Crew, made him very well known in the music industry. He is best known for playing on Elvis’, Viva Las Vegas, Frank Sinatra’s, Strangers in the Night, and the Beach Boys’, Pet Sounds. In 1964 and 1965, Campbell began touring with the Beach Boys. Campbell came across a song called, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” in 1967, written by 19 year old Jimmy Webb, and made it the centerpiece of his album. With his release of the single, “Wichita Lineman,” in 1968, Campbell saw it top the country and pop charts. In 1969, CBS aired the first episode of The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, where Campbell hosted the show and had many different kinds of guests, including, Lucille Ball, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Wonder. Glen Campbell also released the single, “Galveston,” which topped the pop and country charts. He also appeared alongside John Wayne, in the western film, True Grit. However, by the 1970’s, his star had began to fade. In 1972, his show was cancelled and his record sales had started to decline. With his popularity fading, he continued to tour, but in 1975, his singles, “Rhinestone Cowboy,” and “Country Boy,” both reached No. 1 on the charts, and he had a brief moment of upward success, before his life spiraled out of control because of drug addiction. In 1994, Campbell’s autobiography, Rhinestone Cowboy,” was published and made the bestseller list. He continued to record and tour, even though he stayed out of the limelight for the next decade. In 2011, he announced his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, and afterwards, he spent a lot of time saying good-bye by going on tour, which was cut short by his worsening health. He also released the albums, See You There and Ghost on the Canvas. By the time 2013, came around, Campbell had been overrun by the disease. In 2014, the documentary, Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me, premiered at the National Film Festival, which tells the story of his battle with Alzheimer’s and also shows feature footage of his farewell tour.
