Biography

Elgin Baylor Lumpkin, also known by his stage name, Ginuwine, was born on October 15, 1970, to Sandra and James Lumpkin, in Washington, D.C. He was named after NBA basketball player, Elgin Baylor, who is also a Washington D.C. native. HIs love of music and dance came from him watching Michael Jackson and his mother’s videotapes of Fred Astaire and Charlie Chaplin. He joined a breakdancing group when he was 12 years old, called, Finesse Five. Ginuwine attended Forestville High School, also known as Forestville Military Academy, in Forestville, Maryland, in 1989. He earned a paralegal associate’s degree, from Prince George’s Community College, in Largo, Maryland.

Career

Ginuwine, worked his way up to being a performer when he was a teenager. He first found the offices of Sony and Atlantic in the Yellow pages and went and performed for them on unsolicited auditions, but they were not interested. After the unfortunate news of not being interested, he focused on meeting top performers face to face and letting them see what he could do. In 1990, he met with Devante Swing, the lead singer of Jodeci, in the lobby, while they were on tour, and performed for him. After this impromptu performance, he was on his way to making a name for himself. He then signed a deal with Swing’s label, Swing Mob. This label came with other up and coming artists, who would become well known, like, Tim “Timbaland” Mosley and Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliot. After not getting as far in his career as he had planned on doing, he soon left the label. Although Ginuwine, left the label, Timbaland still produced Ginuwine’s first two singles for him. In 1996, Ginuwine signed to Sony and released the album, Ginuwine…The Bachelor, which put him on the list of being a sex symbol with the release of his single, “Pony.” Even though the single went to number four on the Billboard Hot R&B Chart, music lovers only started to pay real attention to him once he covered Prince’s song, “When Doves Cry,” and once he went on tour, with singer Aaliyah. In 1999, he released his next album, 100% Ginuwine, which achieved great success, with every song on the album receiving high praise, by Rolling Stone, critic, Barry Walters. He saw some success in 2009, when he reunited with producer, Timbaland, for his album, A Man’s Thoughts.
