Former Teacher of the Year Sentenced to 30 Years
A former San Diego County Teacher of the Year was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison Friday after pleading guilty to sexually abusing two of her sixth-grade students, concluding a case that shocked the National City community.
Jacqueline Ma, 36, broke down in tears during her sentencing hearing at Chula Vista Superior Court as she admitted to grooming and maintaining sexual relationships with the young boys who had been in her care at Lincoln Acres Elementary School.

Award-Winning Teacher’s Fall From Grace
Ma, who had been named one of San Diego County’s Teachers of the Year in August 2022, issued a tearful apology in court, acknowledging the gravity of her crimes. “I am deeply ashamed of my actions,” Ma told the court, admitting that she had “manipulated” and “deceived” the children entrusted to her care, according to NBC San Diego.
The disgraced educator had taught fifth and sixth grades in the National School District since 2013 before her arrest in March 2023, just seven months after receiving the prestigious teaching award.
The sentence was part of a plea agreement Ma reached with prosecutors in February, when she admitted to two counts of forcible lewd acts with a child under 14 and possession of material depicting a minor engaged in sexual conduct.
Crimes “Occurred in Plain Sight”
Judge Enrique Camarena highlighted the disturbing nature of the case before delivering the sentence, noting that Ma’s “grooming activity occurred in plain sight and the true nature of the defendant’s conduct was not recognized because she was a well-regarded and award-winning teacher,” as reported by Times of San Diego.
The judge described Ma’s actions not as “a single lapse of judgment” but rather as “a prolonged pattern of child sexual abuse” that went undetected due to her professional reputation.
Prosecutors revealed that Ma had groomed the children by providing them with “gifts, food and special attention” and even completing their homework for them to earn their trust.
Investigation Revealed Calculated Exploitation
Police began investigating in March 2023 after the parent of a 12-year-old boy discovered troubling messages between her son and the teacher. The boy’s parents had not allowed him to have social media or personal electronic devices, but Ma had found ways to communicate with him through school tablets and video game chat rooms.
According to Deputy District Attorney Drew Hart, the physical relationship with one victim began in late 2022, with Ma taking calculated steps to avoid detection, including directing the boy to delete messages or use a “vanish mode” feature where communications would automatically disappear.
When initially confronted by a detective about her relationship with the student, Ma reportedly said, “It’s complicated and I may have blurred the lines,” according to court testimony.

Additional Victim and Serious Consequences
Ma was initially charged in connection with one boy, but prosecutors later added charges related to a second student. Before accepting the plea agreement, she had faced a potential sentence of up to 165 years to life in prison.
In addition to the prison term, Ma must register as a sex offender and pay thousands of dollars in fines. Under the terms of her sentence, she will be required to serve all 30 years before becoming eligible for parole consideration.
Defense attorney Patrick Griffin stated that his client accepted the plea deal “because it was the right thing to do” and would spare the victims from having to testify at a trial.
