Shawntae Harris, well-established by the name Da Brat, is a US-based rapper and actress. She was born on April 14, 1974 in Joliet, Illinois. Twice Grammy nominee, her album Funkdafied (1994) which was her debut album sold millions of copies and this made her the first female rapper to have received a platinum certification.
Da Brat has an estimated net worth of $3 million dollar. Her main source of income being her music, she also earns quite a lot by portraying various characters in both television series and films. Her recorded earnings from her first album Funkdafied was $1,000,000. Her second album Anuthatantrum earned her half of the previous one, $500,000. Da Brat was born as Shawntae Harris on April 14, 1974 in Joliet, Illinois. She was raised in Chicago’s West Side. She was brought-up in two different households since her parents never really married each – other. While she was with her mother and grandmother, she sang in the choir group of Apostolic Church. She attended Kenwood Academy and graduated from Academy of Scholastic Achievement, a school that caters to economically inefficient youth in the United States of America, in the year 1992. Her life took a major turn when she won a local rap contest organised by Yo! MTV Raps. There she met the rap duo Kriss Kross who introduced her to their famous producer Jermaine Dupri. Dupri signed her for his So So Def label and raised Da Brat’s image as a “Female Snoop Doggy Dogg”.
Da Brat, whose name was inspired from being “a spoilt only child”, went on to become one of the first female reality based rappers. After selling a million copies of her debut album “Funkdafied” which made her the first female solo rapper to have a platinum – selling album, she released her second album known as “Anuthatantrum”. In the year 2000, she released another album called “Unrestricted” and three years after, “Limelite, Luv & Nighclubz” was released. Her much appreciated work on “Not Tonight” Remix in 1998 followed by her “Got it Poppin” in 2004 earned her two Grammy nominations.
Da Brat faced a serious trouble for the various assault charges which landed her in three years of imprisonment, seven years of probation and two hundred hours of community service. She was released from the prison in the year 2014 and is currently working as a co – host on the Ricky Smiley Morning show. Since 2016, Da Brat has also been appearing as a mentor to the talented youth on the reality TV series, “The Rap Game”.
