He has an older brother, Matthew Francis Nolan, who is a convicted criminal and a younger brother, named, Jonathan. Christopher Nolan’s love of film making started at the young age of seven, when he would take his father’s Super 8 camera and shoot short films with his action figures. His love of the film, Star Wars, at the age of eight, influenced him to make a stop motion animation homage, called, Star Wars. His uncle who worked for NASA, helped him, by sending him some launch footage. Later at age 11, he knew he wanted to be a filmmaker. After relocating to Chicago, with his family during his teenage years, he made a film with, Adrien and Roko Belic, called, Ghenghis Blues, in which he was given credit for his editorial assistance after receiving an Oscar nomination. Nolan went on to work with Belic on a documented safari taken across Africa, by the late photojournalist, Dan Eldon, in the early 1990’s. Christopher Nolan attended Haileybury and Imperial Service College, and independent school, in Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire. He later went to University College London, specifically for the filmmaking facilities. The university was comprised of a Steenbeck editing suite as well as 16mm film cameras. His love of filmmaking led him to become the president of the Union’s Film Society. He screened 35mm feature films during his school year and used the money earned to produce 16mm films over the summers, with his girlfriend and future wife, Emma Thomas. He made two short films during his college years, Tarantella, which was shown on Image Union, which was a video shown on the video showcase on the Public Broadcasting Service.
