Who Is Big Boi?
Antwan André Patton, better known as Big Boi, is a rapper, music producer and songwriter who, along with fellow artist André 3000, make up the highly successful hip-hop duo Outkast. His 2003 single, “The Way Ya Move,” featuring Sleepy Brown, off of Outkast’s double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, became a no. 1 hit on the music charts. Patton has gone on to do solo work, releasing his debut album Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty in 2010 and his follow-up Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors in 2012. His third solo studio album Boomiverse was released in 2017.
Growing Up in Atlanta
Born on February 1, 1975 in Savannah, Georgia, Patton attended Herschel V. Jenkins High School before deciding to move to Atlanta with his aunt. There he finished up his secondary education studying music at a performing arts magnet school and met André 3000. Shortly after, the two formed Outkast and snagged a record deal with LaFace Records.
Spanning six studio albums, starting with their debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994), and their follow ups: ATLiens (1996), Aquemini (1998), and Stankonia (2000), which included the hit singles “Ms. Jackson” and “B.O.B.,” Outkast showed off their musical diversity while developing distinct personas.
In 2003 the duo continued their success with the release of a double album, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, to show off their individual artistry. The album spawned two no. 1 hits: “Hey Ya!” (by André) and “The Way Ya Move” (by Patton) and would win the Grammy for Album of the Year.
Television and Film Appearances
Outside of music, Patton has worked on both the small and big screen. In 2006 he appeared on Nick Cannon’s improv sketch comedy Wild ‘n Out and had film roles in ATL and Idlewild. In 2008 he also played a hip-hop artist on an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Since 2002 Patton has been married to Sherlita Patton and together they have a daughter and a son. He also has another son from an earlier relationship.
Patton is a libertarian. He publicly supported Senator Bernie Sanders in the 2016 presidential election.
